I want to be able to duet with someone like this.
Found my journal from Sierra Leone through New York when I was packing.
I’m so glad I write when I do things. Because I’d otherwise forget little gems like this:
John (the tech who took my blood) said, “Wow, you can say you’ve been to Africa and donated blood—you have a generation in Africa.”
A generation. I will not let my mind be cynical and instead appreciate the possibility that I actually did make a difference.
I miss John. I miss Musa. I miss Makeni. I miss Sierra Leone. I miss the heat and the cold showers and the greasy food and the bed nets and the motorbikes and the hills and the doctors and the kids and Abdulei and Kono and all of it.
I wish I could go back and do it again. Do some things differently.
cried. so beautiful.
he said ‘i love you, and i’m proud of you both, in so many different ways.’

"To the Americans and Europe, the world of the white men and women, there is this negative thinking about Africa. There is nothing good in Africa. They are beggars, there is HIV AIDS, they are at war all the time. But that is just a very small bit of what Africa is."
